Departments

The College of Arts and Letters is comprised of seven departments: Art, Communication, English, Music, Philosophy, Theatre Arts, World Languages and the Liberal Studies Program.

Art
The challenge for visual artists is to discover what is already there, to open up and probe what is inside and outside themselves and to find a means of giving it back to the whole world. It is this adventure which is the focus of the Department of Art.
Five plans are available for students working for the Bachelor of Arts in Art and four options are available for a minor in art. The areas of concentration currently offered are: art history, art education, ceramics, glass, graphic design, graphic design and marketing, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and woodworking and furniture design. Each program provides a strong foundation in art history, theory and practice with the specialized instruction and experience necessary to be competitive and successful in a wide range of fields in art and design. Communication Studies
Our department offers five undergraduate concentrations and two graduate tracks. The undergraduate concentrations are: Human Communication Intercultural Communication, Media Studies, Public Relations, and Rhetoric. The graduate tracks are: Communication Studies and Integrated Marketing Communication
Students explore problems in diverse media (platform conference, print, radio, television, film, and computer-mediated communication), settings (family, industrial, professional, and governmental) and contexts (intercultural and international). Our graduates enter careers in business and industry, government and social services, education, media production, broadcasting, public relations, sales, marketing, writing, personnel, advertising, and training, to name a few. English
The Department of English offers a Bachelor of Arts in English, with concentrations in Literature, Creative Writing, and Linguistics; a minor in English; and a Master of Arts in English Composition with concentrations in Composition, Literature, and Teaching English as a Second Language. In addition, we offer certificate programs in Creative Writing and Professional Writing. The Department publishes The Pacific Review, an annual literary journal mingling student and professional contributions of poetry, short stories, artwork, and one-act plays.

Liberal Studies
We are pleased to offer a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies in our multi-disciplinary degree program. Our curriculum is designed for students who wish to pursue a broad-based course of study drawn from the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Natural Sciences, and the College of Education. By completing the Liberal Studies Program, students meet the General Education Requirements of California State University, San Bernardino. Music
The contemporary musician has a potential access to more kinds of music than ever before in history. The music curriculum—with courses in electronic music, performance, world music, historical studies, music education and integrated theory—reflects that diversity in that it offers programs for the student who wishes to enter the teaching profession, become a professional musician, pursue an advanced degree, or simply enrich his or her education. Philosophy
The Philosophy Department allows students explore fundamental questions in logic, metaphysics and ethics. Philosophical thinking can serve as a model for work in other disciplines and can be extremely valuable to students seeking to clarify central issues of values and actions.

Theatre Arts
The Theatre Arts Department season includes three or four main stage plays and several lab productions during the academic year. Lab productions may be student directed/designed. In addition, the department has two touring groups: The Imagination Players-an elementary school tour-and the Sun Tour-multiethnic theme plays for high school and community college students.
While there are many acting opportunities, CSUSB also boasts an award-winning technical program. Several design students have placed well in regional and national competition at KC/ACTF and USITT conferences. In addition, theatre students are encouraged to work with faculty as Assistant Directors, Designers, Stage Managers, and in Theatre Administration. Theatre faculty encourage highly motivated and qualified students to develop their own creative efforts. New student play scripts and innovative approaches to theatre are strongly encouraged. World Languages & Literatures
The Department of World Languages & Literatures offers a wide variety of courses in the world languages, including American Sign Language, Arabic, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. Bachelor's degrees are available in French and Spanish; minors are available in Arabic, French, German and Spanish, as well as Asian Studies and Latin American Studies.
Our classes will teach you to understand, speak, read and write the language you are studying. Our courses promote an understanding of world civilizations and an appreciation of their literatures. This background will prepare you for jobs in a variety of professions such as international trade, librarian, interpreter, translator, foreign service officer, foreign trade specialist, diplomacy, intelligence, teaching and law enforcement.
